A Comparison of 12 Monkeys & La Jetée

Chris Marker's 1962 short film "La letée" was modified by Terry Gilliam in 1995 to become the feature-Mlength blockbuster "12 Monkeys. Instead of calling his own dystopian narrative a movie, Marker called it a photo book. The film consists of a number of still photos with voiceovers. It has a detached narrator who seems unconcerned with the current situation, which lends a more remote air to a tale about nostalgia for the past. Similar to La Jetée, 12 Monkeys was created by fans of the film and is a purposeful, reverent reworking of Marker's original plot, themes, and concepts. La Jetée is a fascinating Tow-Fi sci-fi time-travel story told in these vignettes, in which a Parisian World War 3 survivor is transported back in time to save mankind before the earth was radioactively destroyed. This editing was exceptional because of its high-concept, action-focused nature. The nameless man in 12 Moneys is chosen because of how tightly he holds onto a picture, such as a childhood memory or the face of a woman on an airport dock. This is a picture book, not a photo album, of course. La Jetée's strength comes from the way the pictures and sounds flow together.

The entire movie is, in essence, a meditation on the passage of time and the established link between Marker's continuous obsession and irage-making. In the movie, he genuinely displayed his talents for photography, visual art, and cinematography. In both movies, the main characters escape their restrictions and travel across time, yet they do it without any agency or control. They genuinely just have ephemeral moments and distant memories to treasure with someone who cannot relate to them.

Despite the concept and climatic twist, Marker seems to be least interested in the narrative. Here's where 12 Monkeys comes in; Gilliam and the authors create a riddle that needs to be solved, Like La Jetee, the movie will reach its conclusion with the revelation that the boy saw his own adult death,

Comparing 9, the short, and 9, the full-length mo

For the short film it surprised me in a very big way. I very honestly did not think that it would be that good of a film being so short. I thought it would look goofy but it was great. It is one of the best things I have watched in such a small amount of time. If I would rate 1 through 10, I would probably give it a 9. Like I said the plot is great so essentially it is about  9 the Main character. The build up is that first he has something flash, giving him a warning and then he has a flashback which has an amazing special effect to it .Boom he is with 5 they both get alerts; and then they see this big monster  which is like dog.5 then tells 9 to go hide so he proceeds to and attempts to fight him off all by himself dies and then the monster takes his soul away. You also see that on the monsters back is many number telling you that that 1-8 die.Which you see that he immediately gets and survival mode and he goes and deceives him. He achieves that and continues to outsmart him eventually killing him. His eye was one of the things that haces alerts which also contained souls. What he did with this is that he had his alert thing left but also the monsters eye was one.So…. He attached them and he brought them all back to life which the special effects there were incredible. The heightened feelings, The suspense, the excitement which made me almost fall of my seat gives you thriller vibes

For the full length film you see how with much more time you obviously get a more finished product with much more detail. Here you see almost the same plot and just better. You  see the same thing with the monster killing someone but you also see the buildup with the scientists which makes 1-9. Which you don’t know anything about the scientist in the short film. Also you get to see that in this version deaths are not only upon the dog it is upon many other robotic things. Which all have cool effects like lasers that come out of one to kill one of them. Teh directorial style is phenomenal it’s weird but it works because with it being a thriller the suspense and that Shane Ackerman creates is absolutely phenomenal. You also got a lot of emotional things with the killings and the showing of their personality’s sense they were talking.

The Full length film had much more details and a much more developed plot but you did get a lot of what you wanted in a short amount of time in the short film. The  full length film
Had the scientist while and much more monster and killers in teh full length. The full length has 1-9 talking while the short film did not. So In this movie you also got personality’s out of 1-9 it wasn’t just simply what they did you also got attached to them. Making this one have an emotional side which made it more entertaining which made the second one not just a thriller but also a drama. I enjoyed the full length more because they were actually talking and doing many more things which is thought was very cool and took it to a different level.

Research: How to make a short film

Blog 3
What is the take away from the video?

I have acknowledged all the aspects and things needed to make a film. I learned the writing tips, production and post production steps and procedures. I could take away that there are ways to be better prepared for filming then I have before.

What good information did you gather while watching it?

Budgeting and the resources you have access to will be crucial throughout the entire making of the film. When editing, cut the scenes down until you can't anymore which will shorten the film to just the important parts of it. Preparation is key for a film. However, even if you create a storyboard for the entire film, there still may be changes while making it. Stick to a theme and a tone and let it guide the story. If you do not do so, it will confuse the audience. Lastly, taking care of your cast is important because if you do not have respect them, they may not make it as easy to film.

How do you envision this helping you through your short film process?

It will help me be more organized and ready for what is to come. This video will allow me to picture my ideas and be able to complete the production process in an easier fashion

- Diction

I feel as if dialogue cuts back on the dramatization of a drama film. We are trying to limit dialogue.

Drama genre

close-up-In a normal over-the-shoulder perspective, you can see the character talking and the person they are talking to while also seeing a second character in the middle of the scene. In addition, they can be a useful approach to include this individual in the shot while demonstrating their point of view, as opposed to employing a POV shot. The majority of the frame will be taken up by a close-up of a person's face. Indicating that she is looking at something or someone behind her, the character will have an oddly angled gaze.

Extreme close-up-Having a close up of a persons face will take up most of the frame. The character will be looking slightly off center implying she is looking at something or someone behind her. A close-up of a person's face will occupy the majority of the frame. The figure will have an oddly angled gaze, indicating that she is looking at something or someone behind her

Medium shot-While not as close as a long shot, medium shots are nevertheless taken from a distance. Usually, they only reveal the character's waist up. This might aid in illuminating the character's goals or body language. The setting may be in the backdrop in medium shots, but the character in the shot will be the major attraction, so the background is usually blurred to draw the audience's attention to the main character and their emotions in the situation.

Long shot-The subject or character will most likely be in the middle of the image because that is where the viewer's focus should be. As a result, the background will be in the viewer's peripheral vision, hidden but still present in the photo. The subject or character will most likely be in the middle of the picture because that is where the viewer's focus should be, and the background will thus be in the viewer's peripheral vision—out of the way but still in the frame.

Genre Comedy

 Comedy;

We decided to research the genre of comedy. There are many common camera angles found in comedy movies. These include:

·      high angles

·      low angles

·      eye level

There are also commonly found camera movements in this genre that include:

·       tracking shots

·      zooms

Finally, some of the shots that are frequently used include:

·      close-ups

·      extreme close-ups

·      medium shots

·       two-shots

·       ariel shots

·      point-of-view shots

Some of the common mis-en-scene elements found in comedy movies include:

·       costumes: mismatched costumes, vibrant/bright colors, animal costumes

·       acting: loud, expressive, funny (making jokes), talkative

·       makeup: messy, vibrant/bright colors, specifically bright lipstick, blush, and/or eyeshadow

·       props: books, glasses, tearaway pants, breakaway chair

·       set: brightly-lighted sets, usually during the daytime

Some of the frequently used editing techniques in comedies include:

·      cutaways

·      shot-reverse shots

·      eye-line matches

·      jump cuts

Finally, some of the commonly used sound elements used in comedy films include:

·      diegetic sounds

·      non-diegetic sounds

·      dialogues

·      voiceovers

·      incidental music

Examples of comedy films include:

·      Booksmart (2019) by Olivia Wilde

·      The Death of Stalin (2017) by Armando Iannucci

·      Knives Out (2019) by Rian Johnson

·      Game Night (2018) by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein

Some elements of the genre that we like and would use in our film include eye-level angles, tracking shots, medium shots, point-of-view shots, acting, set, cutaways, shot-reverse shots, eye-line matches, diegetic sounds, dialogues, and incidental music.

However, some of the elements of the genre that we do not like and would not use in our film include high and low angles, zooms, extreme-close-ups, ariel shots, heavy/extravagant costumes and makeup, jumpcuts, and voiceovers. Some of these elements, such as extreme-close-ups, we feel would not fit the overall mood we are trying to create for our film. Also, things like extravagant costumes or makeup wouldn't fit our film because it is supposed to reflect someone's daily life where they look like regular people. Additionally, some things we simply don't have the resources for. An example of this would be ariel shots. My group doesn't own something like a drone with a camera built-in, which is what it would take to be able to film a shot like this. Therefore, we need to refrain from elements like those.
